Florida is the Most Dangerous State to Ride a Bike
With its balmy weather and beautiful beaches, it is no surprise that South Florida has a large biking community. However, Florida is also one of the most dangerous states to ride a bicycle. In 2010 Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration showed the Florida had the highest percentage of fatalities per 100,000 individuals for both cyclists and pedestrians. It appears that the situation is Florida is not getting much better. The most recent statistics show that the number of bicyclists involved in a fatal accident rose from 76 to 120 between 2010 and 2011.
This phenomenon is interesting because, as a whole, fatal car accidents are down in Florida, and have been decreasing since 2005. However, the numbers of bike accidents were 58% higher in 2011 than in 2010. Motorcycle accidents followed a similar trend, increasing by 18% during the same years.
These latest statistics do not discuss the number of non-fatal bicycle accidents, but some sources, suggest that bicycle injuries are often grossly underreported.
Florida Laws and Policies Designed to Make Biking Safer
Florida has taken steps to reduce the number of bike related injuries. Children under the age of 16 are required to wear helmets. Many cities throughout Florida have also received federal funds to build bike lanes and trails, which tend to reduce the number of bike related accidents.
Bike safety is key to avoiding accidents and injury. Following a few simple steps can help greatly reduce the risk that you will be involved in a serious accident. Riding with bike lights, not riding too close to the curb, and avoiding riding at night can increase your visibility and reduce the risk of accident. Avoiding busy streets and riding with traffic is also important.
